Chinese vehicle exports bolster pure car and truck carrier freight market

Global demand across the pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) segment remains firmly supported, driven primarily by sustained momentum in Chinese automotive export volumes. According to a weekly market report published by shipbroker Intermodal, the substantial expansion of outbound vehicle flows from China has established itself as a principal catalyst for the specialised shipping sector during 2026.

The influx of manufactured vehicles requiring long-haul maritime transport has generated strong employment across the global roll-on/roll-off fleet. Intermodal noted that these export dynamics are actively maintaining high levels of vessel utilisation across core trade lanes connecting Asian manufacturing hubs with overseas consumer markets.

Alongside robust tonnage deployment, the persistent requirement for vehicle transport capacity continues to underpin elevated charter earnings for vessel owners. With automotive manufacturers maintaining active export programmes, available vessel supply within the sector remains tightly balanced against ongoing freight commitments.

The car carrier sector has experienced sustained structural demand shifts in recent years, with China's growing share of worldwide automotive distribution acting as a central pillar for specialised fleet fundamentals and operational revenues.
