Baltic Dry Index Reaches 3,488 Points on Strengthened Commodity Freight Demand
The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk shipping benchmark climbed 4.7% on Thursday to reach its highest level since October 2021 amid rising demand for coal and iron ore transport.
Dry bulk freight rates recorded substantial upward momentum on Thursday, pushing the Baltic Exchange’s primary shipping benchmark to levels unseen in nearly five years. The Baltic Dry Index, which monitors the cost of transporting dry raw materials across key maritime routes, registered a daily rise of 4.7% to settle at 3,488 points.
The gain marked the second consecutive trading session of increases for the composite dry bulk measure. Following this latest advance, the index reached its highest level since October 2021, reflecting a sustained firming across the international seaborne freight complex.
According to the Baltic Exchange, the surge in the broader benchmark comes on the back of notable expansion in shipping requirements for fundamental industrial inputs. Stronger appetite for vessel capacity has been underpinned primarily by movements in iron ore and coal, alongside wider demand for other unrefined bulk commodities.
The simultaneous uptick in vessel chartering requirements across major raw material categories has tightened available maritime transport capacity, supporting the pronounced multi-session rally across dry bulk segments.
