Fincantieri Launches Hydrogen-Powered Viking Cruise Vessel at Ancona
Shipbuilder Fincantieri has launched a new hydrogen-fuelled cruise vessel for operator Viking at its Ancona yard in Italy.
Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has reached a construction milestone with the launch of a new hydrogen-powered cruise ship commissioned by Viking. The technical launch ceremony took place at the builder's shipyard facility located in Ancona on the Adriatic coast.
The newly launched newbuild represents a development in alternative propulsion adoption within the passenger vessel segment. Designed to incorporate hydrogen technology, the vessel forms part of Viking's ongoing fleet development programme undertaken in partnership with the Italian shipbuilder.
Work at the Ancona facility will now progress towards the fitting-out phase following the hull's entry into the water. Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard has served as a central construction site for multiple series of ocean-going cruise vessels built for the cruise operator over recent years.
The integration of hydrogen propulsion systems into cruise vessels reflects broader maritime industry efforts to deploy alternative fuels across passenger fleets. Technical delivery and final completion activities will continue at the Italian shipyard before the vessel enters commercial service for Viking.
Fincantieri continues construction activities across its European yard network, with the Ancona site maintaining a dedicated focus on mid-sized passenger and cruise ship manufacturing contracts.
